The Senior Citizens of The Colony are part of the Community Center, a gathering place where active adults age 50 and over come together for services and activities that enhance quality of life, respond to diverse needs and interests, support independence, and encourage involvement within the Center and community to promote active and healthy aging. These activities include food drives, scholarships to local students, crocheted donations to VA, hospitals, Red Cross, and hospice; donations to service members, Christmas Angel project for elderly needy, and craft donations to nursing/memory care facilities.
Any member of The Colony Community Center is eligible to participate in Senior Citizen of The Colony activities. The Colony and area residents age 50+ are encouraged to visit the Community Center and participate in the activities.
Donations to Senior Citizens of The Colony are always gratefully accepted. You may specify a donation to be used for one of our activities. If no specific activity is noted, the donation will go into the general fund to support whichever activity is in need. Donations may be made to: Senior Citizens of The Colony - 5151 N Colony Blvd The Colony, TX 75056
The Senior Citizens of The Colony support an ongoing food drive.
Monetary donations are made to local food banks twice a year
in addition to the canned food as it is collected.
An endowed scholarship was established by The Senior Citizens of The Colony in 2009. This scholarship through the Lewisville Education Foundation will grant a scholarship to one The Colony High School graduate each year. Qualifications for the scholarship include being a The Colony resident and planning on majoring in a field that would serve seniors, such as medicine or social services.
The crochet group is famously known for their name, the Happy Hookers. They take great pleasure in attaching a label to each of the hundreds of items donated each year that states the item was made with love and prayers by the Happy Hookers. Items donated include blankets, caps and booties for preemies; wiggies for cancer patients, caps for impoverished children, lap robes for VA hospitals and the Red Cross. These women work tirelessly many hours a week to provide for those in need. They have been featured as a Good Neighbor on WFAA News.
The Colony Crafters
The Colony Crafters, in addition to providing an outlet for seniors to socialize and learn new crafts at the center, donate crafts to area nursing and memory care centers. Donations have included Mother's Day corsages, Spring flower wreaths, door decorations, wash cloth bunnies and more.
Military & Veteran Support
The Seniors support military and veterans in several ways. They have an ongoing drive to collect toiletries and cell phones to send to service members overseas. Books from our library are rotated out and sent to VA hospitals. There is an annual project to make Stockings for Soldiers.
Covered Dish Dinner
The second Friday of each month, the seniors sponsor a covered dish dinner at the Community Center. It provides an opportunity for members and their guests to get out and socialize, enjoy some entertainment, and make new friends. The dinners are themed for the current season. On two occasions, we have had seniors get married at the covered dish.
