About the Building Inspections Department
The goal of the Building Inspections Department is to provide effective, responsive plan review and inspection services within the corporate city limits through the enforcement of building codes and the Zoning Ordinance for the health safety and welfare of persons of the community.
The Building Inspections Department is responsible for the issuance and inspection of development related permits and the certificate of occupancy of structures throughout the City of The Colony. The Building Inspections Department is also responsible for Safety Inspections on residential and commercial rental properties.
Enforcement is achieved through plan review prior to the issuance of permits and on-site inspection. After permit issuance, Building Inspections verifies compliance throughout the construction process. Permits are required before performing any new construction or with any addition, alteration or repair of existing buildings, structures, plumbing, electrical or mechanical work.

Customer Services will be CLOSED from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
The Building Inspections Department is located inside
City Hall at 6800 Main Street. Office hours are Monday thru Friday,
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

New Irrigation Requirements
Effective January 1, 2009, the City of The Colony will be adopting the landscape irrigation program required by HB 1656. This program requires the following:
- Irrigation plan and drawing showing the actual installation is required at time of application.
- As of January 1, 2010, a licensed irrigator or irrigation technician must be on-site during installation.
- Irrigation systems should not be designed to spray water on hard surfaces.
- Backflow devices must be approved by a laboratory.

All contractors working in the City of The Colony must be registered. To register, fill out the Contractor Registration Form and submit with copies of your drivers license and masters license (if applicable). The registration is valid for a period of one year beginning on the date paid.
All homeowners who are working as their own general contractor must register using the Homeowner Registration Form. There is no fee to register, however, verification with the county must reflect homestead status if the homeowner will be handling any electrical, mechanical or plumbing work on the property.
