Welcome Message

The City of The Colony is a home-rule city with a council-manager form of Griffin Middle School government. The City Council is made up of seven members. There are three at-large positions: the Mayor and Places 1 and 2. The remaining four council members, Places 3-6, are single-member districts. All council members are elected for three-year terms. Click the following links for information on city council members, a city council district map (PDF), and city council meeting information.

The Colony is located in southern Denton County on the eastern edge of Lewisville Lake. Incorporated in 1977, the City of The Colony currently has a population of about 42,000 and growing. While The Colony is still a young city by comparison, its history can be documented back to the Peters Colony Settlement from the 1800s. The name of the city reflects the heritage of the historic settlement, one of the earliest settlements in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and was deliberately chosen to memorialize the spirit of a new way of life idealized by the original settlement.

In the present day, The Colony City Council, in conjunction with The Colony Economic Development Corp., has positioned the community for maximum residential and economic growth. As a result, construction along the State Highway 121 Corridor is booming, thanks also in large part to The Colony landing the nation’s largest home-furnishings store: Nebraska Furniture Mart. NFM anchors a massive mixed-use development known as Grandscape, which is expected to draw more high-end retail, restaurants, hotels, and entertainment attractions to the area. Visit our award-winning Convention & Visitors Bureau website for information on what to do, where to eat and where to stay throughout the city.

Several other mixed-use developments, such as The Cascades at The Colony and Austin Ranch, provide additional corporate and office space, retail, hotels and homes. Housing options include traditional housing, apartments, townhomes and retirement living.

While economic growth is a major focus of the City of The Colony, maintaining a family oriented and safe environment remain top priorities. Four fire stations are located in the city, with plans for a fifth, and the crime rate is one of the lowest in Texas. Being centrally located in the region, The Colony has much to offer prospective businesses, visitors and residents. We have quality housing, educational opportunities, cultural events, recreation and family friendly activities. Service organizations and volunteer opportunities are also available for you to become involved in the community.

The Colony Community Development Corp. focuses on quality of life for the residents and improvements to parks and other public areas. The Colony is home to: three golf courses located on Lewisville Lake; two lake parks for camping and water activities; a disc-golf course; an indoor soccer facility; a recreation center offering a variety of classes and youth sports programs; a community center with a plethora of planned senior activities; an aquatic park with indoor and outdoor pools; many neighborhood parks and athletic fields; and a water park. The Colony also boasts a trail system that currently covers more than 21 miles of walking/biking paths with plans for further expansion.

Annually, the city hosts a number of events for its residents and visitors including Liberty by the Lake celebrating Fourth of July; the American Heroes: A Salute to Veterans festival honoring our servicemen and women for Veterans Day; a Daddy Daughter Dance; and Christmas Lights Spectacular, to name a few. The Colony also provides opportunities for arts and history enthusiasts.

The City of The Colony has a well-established relationship with the Denton County Commissioners, partnering on several capital projects beneficial not just for the city but also the region. Several major road improvement projects have recently been completed or are well underway, thanks in large part to the forward thinking of Denton County and City of The Colony officials. Transportation and roadway improvements are always high priorities.

The city’s convenient location offers minimal drive time to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Dallas Love Field, downtown Dallas, area attractions, shopping opportunities, and multiple corporate headquarters. The Sam Rayburn Tollway (State Highway 121) spans the city and provides access to other major thoroughfares within minutes.

Students in The Colony are served by two of the state’s most reputable school districts: Lewisville and Little Elm ISDs. Inside the city's limits, there are six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school as part of Lewisville ISD. Little Elm ISD operates an elementary school and a middle school serving students in The Tribute subdivision. The Colony's location provides access to several higher education institutions, including Southern Methodist University, the University of North Texas, University of Texas at Dallas, Texas Woman’s University, and Collin College.

We invite you to come and see for yourself what a great city The Colony is, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of suburban living with all the conveniences of the big city. We are proud of the quality of life our residents enjoy and welcome you to live, work and play in the City of The Colony!
