Useful links and information regarding FEMA individual assistance relating to recent storms; Texas Department of Insurance checklists; and an update to SNAP benefits.
As communities around Texas continue assessing the aftermath of last week’s winter storms, the City of The Colony recommends individuals continue submitting the requested Texas Department of Emergency Management individual damage survey. These data help Denton County meet the mandated financial threshold and assists with starting the Individual Assistance process.
For individuals needing housing assistance:
- They must first file a claim with their insurance company. Helpful checklists and other information is available from the Texas Department of Insurance.
- If insurance does not cover the damages in question, individuals may then then file for individual assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) website. If they qualify, the process will continue with an inspection. After inspection, individuals will be referred as appropriate for assistance.
SNAP benefits update
Also, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission has announced that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients may use their food benefits to purchase hot foods and ready-to-eat meals due to impacts from the severe winter storm. Replacement benefits include food lost or destroyed due to the severe weather. For details, participants may dial 2-1-1.
