The City of The Colony purchases the majority of its water from Dallas Water Utilities (DWU), which has been undergoing changes to its treatment facilities in recent years intended to enhance the performance of disinfectants.
As a result, water produced by the new system has a higher mineral content, or hardness, namely calcium.
The Colony is served by DWU's Elm Fork treatment facility, which is scheduled to begin the change-over on July 22, and continue through 2024. While most customers may not notice any difference in water quality, those with home filtration systems or commercial dishwashers and ice-makers may need to consider making adjustments to account for the increased mineral content of the water.
